DRIVERS ED: Putnam County Schools will offer a free Driver’s Education course this summer. The course will be offered at Poca High School on the Driving Range Monday through Friday beginning June 23 and ending on July 29. Registration is open now and will close on April 23. PCS will offer two start time options for Driver’s Education. Option One: 8 AM-10:30 AM
Option Two: 10:30 AM-1 PM Each course is limited to 40 students and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. There will be a waitlist created if more than 80 students sign-up for the course, and if a student cancels, the student will be called from the waitlist in order of sign-up. Students will receive the requirements to receive their driver certification cards, including written, component, observation hours, and driving range and street driving hour requirements. To receive ½ credit for this course, a student must attend all 24 days of class. Students must be currently enrolled in a Putnam County Public School and must be 15 years of age before the class ends on July 29, 2021. There is no charge for the course; however, parents will have to arrange transportation for their students. Since the Program started in 2013, Backpack Buddy has shipped over 15,000 boxes of nutritional, personal care, informative, and educational items to Putnam County Students. Families may now sign-up for the free Summer 2021 Backpack Buddy Meal Box Program. Summer 'Backpack' Meal Boxes will be mailed to homes in unmarked boxes at various times throughout the summer. Deliveries will start in the middle of June and will continue until the start of the new school year. Interested applicants should complete the application form linked below for the Putnam Area Backpack Buddy. The deadline for application completion is April 26th. At the high school level, SOLE will offer a variety of free programs and workshops offered throughout the summer. Transportation to and from main site locations will provide all students access to Monday-Thursday, 8:30 AM-1:30 PM programming. Credit Acquisition Location: Hurricane High June 29 to August 10 8:30 AM-1:30 PM / Optional Support Time 1:30 PM to 3:30 PM Credit Recovery Location: Hurricane High and Poca High June 29 to July 30 8:30 AM-1:30 PM Credit Acquisition & Recovery Registration Information: Student's high school counselors will complete student registration forms for those who need to be enrolled in the Credit Acquisition Summer Program or traditional Credit Recovery through WVVS. ACT/SAT Prep: The ACT/SAT Prep is a virtual course that will help students develop skills and test-taking strategies to improve ACT/SAT achievement scores. Register now for Putnam County Schools’ Middle School Summer SOLE Program! Putnam County Schools will be offering middle school students FREE summer programs July 29 through August 10 to engage students in hands-on, project-based learning activities tied to the middle-level content standards through Project Lead the Way (PLTW) as well as opportunities to increase student success through critical skill blocks. Locations are at Hurricane Middle School and George Washington Middle School. Doors open at 8 AM. Transportation to and from summer school locations will be provided to central sites for families in need of assistance. Free breakfast and lunch will be provided in all 8:30 AM-1:30 PM sessions and on Fridays during Robotics Challenge. Registration for both summer sessions is NOW Open and will close on April 23 at 4 pm. Session One: June 29-July 20 Session Two: July 22-August 10 Students may enroll in Summer SOLE Session One (Monday-Thursday), Summer SOLE Session Two (Monday-Thursday), Automation & Robotics Friday Challenge Sessions (Six Fridays), or a combination of all three. Governor Jim Justice has proclaimed March 15-19 as Flood Safety and Severe Weather Awareness Week in WV. The WV Emergency Management Division and the National Weather Service (Charleston Division) plan to share tips for preparing and responding to severe weather.
