Congratulations to the only 2024 Coca-Cola Scholar in wild and wonderful West Virginia, from Putnam County, a Hurricane High School Senior … Paisley Tabor!
Over 103,800 applications were submitted, 1,514 semifinalists were selected to submit extensive applications and essays, and 250 regional finalists were chosen to interview Coca-Cola Foundation staff members and previous Coke Scholars Program scholarship recipients. Paisley Tabor was honored as 1 of 150 winners named 2024 Coca-Cola Scholars and will receive a $20,000 college scholarship!
Paisley was hailed a game changer – a force for positive change in our community and for good in the world. She will join the Coke Scholars network at Scholars Weekend April 25-28, 2024, in Atlanta, GA, where she will be celebrated at the Coca-Cola Scholars Banquet, followed by a weekend with their Leadership Development Institute, a leadership experience unlike any other. Scholars Weekend will also include tours of local landmarks in Atlanta, networking with alumni and staff, and a group community service project.
Congratulations, Paisley, on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and absolutely outstanding accomplishment! We are so proud to have you as a student leader in our community!

Putnam County Schools kicked off the 2024 academic event season this Tuesday with the highly anticipated Putnam County Spelling Bee hosted at Buffalo High School and sponsored by the Putnam County Library.
School Spelling Bee Champions at the elementary and middle school levels competed for the coveted county champion title and the opportunity to represent Putnam County at the 2024 Gazette-Mail Regional Online Spelling Bee.
Tamara Rader of Winfield Middle spelled the anticipated championship word “rhythmically” in the 15th round to become the 2024 Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion! Spelling Bee Runner-Up was returning county speller Ava Young, an elementary student at Teays Valley Christian.
Tamara and Ava will advance to the Regional Bee this March, administered using the Scripps Online Platform. The winner of the Regional Bee will represent the state of West Virginia at the national competition in Washington, D.C.
A special Spelling Bee thank you to our guest pronouncer Putnam County Library Director Megan Tarbett and judges Lynda Rumbaugh, Elizabeth Hoh, and Susan Beck!

The Putnam County Collaborative Pre-K Program will begin registration for their FREE 4-Year-Old Pre-K Program as follows:
Beginning January 17, 2024, parents/guardians may register their child by visiting the PCS website at www.putnamschools.com, selecting the “Menu” tab, “Parents,” “PreK,” and then clicking the “Sign-Up” button to begin the registration process by filling out the questionnaire. Please note that the registration link will not be available until 8 a.m. on January 17th.
Parents/guardians may call Putnam County Schools at (304)586-0500 ext. 1133, ext. 1178, or ext. 1122 for assistance if internet access is unavailable.
To be eligible, children must reside in Putnam County and turn four before July 1, 2024.
