Putnam County Schools kicked off the 2024 academic event season this Tuesday with the highly anticipated Putnam County Spelling Bee hosted at Buffalo High School and sponsored by the Putnam County Library.   School Spelling Bee Champions at the elementary and middle school levels competed for the coveted county champion title and the opportunity to represent Putnam County at the 2024 Gazette-Mail Regional Online Spelling Bee.   Tamara Rader of Winfield Middle spelled the anticipated championship word “rhythmically” in the 15th round to become the 2024 Putnam County Spelling Bee Champion! Spelling Bee Runner-Up was returning county speller Ava Young, an elementary student at Teays Valley Christian.   Tamara and Ava will advance to the Regional Bee this March, administered using the Scripps Online Platform. The winner of the Regional Bee will represent the state of West Virginia at the national competition in Washington, D.C.   A special Spelling Bee thank you to our guest pronouncer Putnam County Library Director Megan Tarbett and judges Lynda Rumbaugh, Elizabeth Hoh, and Susan Beck!   Congratulations to all Putnam Student Spellers and our new Spelling Bee Champion, Tamara, and Runner-Up, Ava! We are honored to have you represent Putnam County. We wish you the best of luck advancing to the next round of the competition! 🐝🖤🏆#PutnamProud https://www.putnamschools.com/article/1405560

Putnam County Schools would like to congratulate Jacob Holtzapfel and Brayden Marshall of Winfield High School on being selected as semifinalists in the 69th annual National Merit Scholarship Program!   Nationwide, semifinalists represent fewer than 1% of United States seniors. Of the more than 16,000 semifinalists, about 95% are expected to achieve finalist standing, and approximately half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Semifinalists will go on to compete for approximately 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million offered in the spring.    Finalists will be notified in February 2024, and National Merit Scholarship winners will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April 2024 and concluding in July.   Good Luck Jacob & Brayden! #PutnamProud
