The Importance of Your School Library

"We hope that libraries will always exist as places for learners to find information, resources, services, and instruction. But formats, technologies, learning needs, and our schools are evolving. And so are students themselves. Our entire information and communication landscapes have shifted—and this shift will only continue." - Valenza & Johnston (October 2009)

The school library is central to learning and plays a key role as a place for encouraging innovation, curiosity, and problem solving. Your library is a catalyst for literacy and reading and for teaching and scaffolding inquiry learning. School libraries make a difference to students’ understanding and achievement and provide support for teaching and learning throughout the school. The school library is an important part of the school community and reflects and welcomes this community.

Your school librarian media specialist is the key to unlock the possibilities found in your school libraries.  As students travel this technology age, the librarian, too, has been given the tools and the passport to help students navigate the world of technology.  From online databases to laptops to distance learning to digital books, your school librarians are well-versed in the role of technology in school libraries.  It is up to you, the teacher and student, to take advantage of their knowledge and expertise.

Your school librarian...

 Welcomes each student to the library to explore and learn
 Teaches students how to find information from many sources
 Teaches students and staff to use databases and access online information
 Teaches students the research process
 Is a link to other libraries
 Provides equal access to information
 Prepares students to be lifelong learners
 Locates current research information for students, staff, and administrators
 Promotes reading
 Collaborates with teachers to plan, teach, and evaluate instruction

So, stop by your library - speak with your school's librarian and use her talents and knowledge to support your classroom activities.
